American Cinematheque Skipping 2026 Award After Ryan Gosling Exit

The American Cinematheque said Friday that its 40th annual American Cinematheque Awards Gala, which was set to honor Ryan Gosling, will not take place this year.

Organizers said Gosling was no longer available to accept the award due to scheduling conflicts. Today, the AC only said the new date for the gala would be in 2027, and that there will be a new honoree.

The AC announced in June that Gosling was its pick for the honor, coming off the outsized success of his latest movie Project Hail Mary. The 2026 tribute ceremony was set for November 2 at the Beverly Hilton.

The event, a mainstay on the Hollywood awards circuit that attracts serious star power, is an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit American Cinematheque that offers year-round programming at its Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, Los Feliz 3 Theatre in Los Feliz and Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Gosling, meanwhile, is plenty busy. After Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary dominated the box office after its March release to gross $684.6 million globally, he’s got Star Wars: Starfighter coming in May 2027, followed by a re-team with Starfighter director Shawn Levy and writer Jonathan Tropper on a Ghost Rider movie for Marvel that will hit theaters in 2028.

Most recently, the American Cinematheque Award bestowed its award on Michael B. Jordan last year and Jessica Chastain in 2024. Past honorees also include Eddie Murphy, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Tom Cruise, Jodie Foster, Al Pacino, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Robert Downey Jr., Amy Adams, Spike Lee, Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren among others.
