Vikings Make Surprise Odell Beckham Jr. Move Ahead of Saints Game

Odell Beckham Jr. is getting another opportunity in the NFL, and his latest stop could provide exactly what the Minnesota Vikings need as they look to continue their undefeated start.

Minnesota signed the veteran wide receiver to its practice squad Wednesday, adding a familiar face to an offense dealing with injuries to several key players.

The move comes as the Vikings prepare for Sunday’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints, with star receiver Justin Jefferson and fellow wideout Jordan Addison both listed as questionable.

Jefferson is recovering from an ankle injury suffered in Week 3, while Addison has been dealing with a hamstring issue.

With both players’ availability uncertain, Beckham could find himself playing an important role the first time his cleats touch the field for his new team.

The three-time Pro Bowler has yet to be elevated to Minnesota’s active game-day roster, but head coach Kevin O’Connell has not ruled out the possibility.

For Beckham, the opportunity represents another chapter in a career that has featured remarkable highs, frustrating injuries and several attempts to return to his previous form.

The 33-year-old began the 2026 season with the New York Giants, the franchise that originally selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

His return to New York was short-lived.

Beckham appeared in three games for the Giants but failed to record a reception, receiving just one target before being released Sept. 29.

Rather than allowing that setback to end his NFL comeback, Beckham quickly found another opportunity with Minnesota.

And this time, he’s joining a team with legitimate postseason aspirations.

The Vikings enter Week 5 with a perfect 4-0 record, placing themselves among the NFL’s early contenders. However, their success has come despite an offense that has struggled to consistently move the ball through the air.

With quarterback Kyler Murray leading the offense, Minnesota has leaned on its defense and timely offensive production to remain undefeated.

The injuries to Jefferson and Addison have only complicated matters.

Jefferson missed Minnesota’s Week 4 victory over the Miami Dolphins, leaving the Vikings without their most dangerous offensive weapon.

Addison has also been limited by his hamstring injury, creating additional uncertainty surrounding the receiving corps.

That’s where Beckham could help.

Although he is no longer the explosive receiver who dominated NFL highlights during his early years with the Giants, Beckham brings experience and familiarity with Minnesota’s coaching staff.

O’Connell served as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams during Beckham’s memorable 2021 season.

After joining Los Angeles midway through that campaign, Beckham became an important contributor to the Rams’ championship run.

He recorded 27 receptions for 305 yards and five touchdowns in eight regular-season games before adding 21 catches for 288 yards and two scores during the postseason.

Beckham also caught the opening touchdown of Super Bowl LVI against the Cincinnati Bengals before suffering a torn ACL.

Despite the injury, Los Angeles went on to win the championship, giving Beckham the first Super Bowl ring of his career.

Now, more than four years later, Beckham and O’Connell have an opportunity to work together again.

Their familiarity could make the transition easier as the veteran receiver attempts to learn Minnesota’s offense and prepare for a potential role.

Beckham also shares a connection with Jefferson.

Both receivers played college football at LSU, and Beckham has maintained a friendship with the Vikings superstar.

That familiarity could help Beckham settle into his new surroundings and make the transition a little easier.

However, there are still questions about how much the veteran receiver has left to offer.

Beckham spent the entire 2025 season out of football, and his production in recent years has been a far cry from the numbers that once made him one of the NFL’s most dangerous receivers.

Odell Beckham Jr. #13 of the New York Giants shakes hands with Matthew Stafford #9 of the Los Angeles Rams

During his 2024 stint with the Miami Dolphins, he recorded just nine receptions for 55 yards.

His last significant statistical contribution came with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, when he finished with 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns.

Minnesota isn’t necessarily asking Beckham to become the focal point of its passing attack.

Instead, the Vikings could use his experience as insurance while Jefferson and Addison work toward returning to full strength. If either receiver is unable to play Sunday, Beckham could become an option for the active game-day roster.

The matchup would also carry personal significance.

Beckham is a New Orleans native, meaning a potential Vikings debut would come in his hometown.

For a player who has spent the past several seasons trying to establish himself again, that opportunity could make his latest NFL chapter even more meaningful.

The Vikings have already shown they can win despite offensive challenges.

Now, they’re hoping an experienced veteran can help provide another option as they attempt to keep their undefeated season alive.

Whether Beckham takes the field Sunday remains to be seen.

But Minnesota’s decision to bring him aboard gives the former superstar another chance to prove he still has something left to offer.
