Jahmyr Gibbs passes Lions legend Barry Sanders to break notable NFL record

Jahmyr Gibbs continues to build an impressive resume with every game he plays this season, and in Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals, the Detroit Lions star broke a record held by NFL legend Barry Sanders.

The Lions blew out the Cardinals 45-21, and Gibbs was a huge reason why. He had 25 carries for 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns to power Detroit in the win.

His second touchdown of the game was especially significant, as Gibbs now has 58 touchdowns, the most in NFL history by a player younger than 25. Gibbs, 24, passed Lions legend Sanders for his historic accomplishment amid what’s been an impressive early season.

Entering the game, Gibbs ranks fifth with five touchdowns and is tied for fifth in the NFL with 353 rushing yards. Should he continue on this pace, he’s looking at a third straight season with over 1,000 rushing yards and the potential for double-digit touchdowns.

While the season isn’t even halfway over, Gibbs is part of the early race for the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award. He is currently tied with fellow running backs Kenneth Walker III of the Kansas City Chiefs and Bijan Robinson of the Atlanta Falcons in DraftKings Sportsbook’s odds to win the award, per Vegas Insider.

While achieving records and awards can be special, Gibbs is likely more interested in his team winning and returning to the playoffs. The Lions failed to reach the postseason last year despite how well he played.

This year, they’re off to a 3-2 start, tied with the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears for second in the NFC North. The Minnesota Vikings pulled off another win on Sunday to remain unbeaten, showing it could be another tight battle for the division.

Gibbs and the Lions get a bye week before returning to the field on Sunday, Oct. 25, when they host the Packers in a battle of division rivals.
