What to Know About the Controversy Surrounding Kimberly Guilfoyle

Responding to the Journal’s latest report, a spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Athens said that Guilfoyle has “faithfully followed State Department ethics and gift reporting guidelines.”

How are lawmakers reacting?

Guilfoyle and the allegations surrounding her add to other issues hounding the Trump Administration heading into the November midterms, where Republicans are hoping to defend their majorities in Congress.

Some Democrats have called for her removal. In a Sept. 30 letter to Rubio, Rep. Gregory Meeks (D, N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sought answers about the allegations. Meeks said in a statement that the reports about Guilfoyle’s actions were “deeply concerning and suggest potentially corrupt influences on U.S. foreign policy,” adding that if found true, she should be “removed from her position.”

Rep. Robert Garcia (D, Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, wrote to Guilfoyle on Oct. 8 that her reported conduct with Deters “raises serious public corruption and national security concerns.” Garcia requested she hand over financial and communications records related to the controversy.
