Who Was Ann Mannix? Ex-San Francisco Top Female Cop and Daughter Shot Dead by Former Police Sergeant Husband in Horrific Murder Suicide

San Francisco’s former highest-ranking female police officer and her daughter were fatally shot by her husband in California. Former San Francisco Deputy Police Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and her daughter Katie, 24, were fatally shot by her husband, retired police sergeant Kevin Mannix, 68, on Sunday night before he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police found all three bodies inside a home in Marin County, an affluent area across the bay from San Francisco. San Francisco police confirmed the deaths, with Chief Derrick Lew informing department staff of the tragedy in an internal message. He said the department was sharing the tragic news of the deaths “with heavy hearts.”

Motive Behind Murder Unclear

He also urged colleagues to remember the family in their prayers. “Please keep their family in your prayers. BSU is available to all members who may need it during this difficult time,” Lew wrote.

Ann’s longtime friend Billie Suder, who said they had known each other for 60 years, also spoke to The New York Post about the loss.

“This is so sad for me. She was my best friend of 60 years. Love her she didn’t deserve this,” Suder said.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene just after 5 p.m. and found all three victims dead inside the home. According to a press release, the shooting took place in Strawberry Circle, an unincorporated community in Strawberry, east of Mill Valley.

Officers reached the property within minutes and contacted the person who had initially called to report the incident. The caller had already left the home, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities secured the area around the home as they began investigating. Detectives from the sheriff’s office investigations unit remained at the scene late Sunday night. “There is no known threat to the community,” they said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Both Were Decorated Officers

Ann built a long career with the San Francisco Police Department, taking on increasingly senior responsibilities. In 2018, she became deputy chief of the Field Operations Bureau, followed by an appointment to lead the Special Operations Bureau in 2019, department records show.

She broke new ground in the department as its first female SWAT team member and later became the unit’s leader.

Kevin retired from the San Francisco Police Department in June 2018, ending a 27-year career with the force. The following month, Taraval Station published his farewell letter, in which he reflected on the relationships he had formed during his years in law enforcement and his plans to devote more time to his loved ones.

“I leave the SFPD, but I am taking your friendships with me forever,” he wrote.

Following Sunday night’s shooting, the San Francisco Police Officers Association issued a statement expressing its grief over the deaths.

“The tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix in a suspected murder-suicide has left our entire SFPD family reeling.

“There are no words that can fully capture the depth of this tragedy, nor are there simple answers to the painful questions we are all asking.

“Ann Mannix was a trailblazer in our department—becoming the first woman to join and lead the SWAT team, and rising to lead both the Field Operations and Special Operations Bureaus.

“Many worked alongside Kevin during his 27 years of dedicated service at Taraval Station and beyond. To see their lives, and the life of their 24-year-old daughter Katie, end in such a horrific and senseless manner is a burden that weighs heavily on every officer, active and retired.”
