Tatiana Maslany, Tony Shalhoub & John Turturro Set For Broadway ‘Rhinoceros’

Emmy winners Tatiana Maslany and John Turturro and Tony winner Tony Shalhoub will take to the Broadway stage this spring in a Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Eugène Ionesco’s absurdist classic Rhinoceros, last seen on Broadway in 1961.

To be directed by Diane Paulus, Rhinoceros will begin previews at Roundabout’s Todd Haimes Theatre on Wednesday, April 7, 2027, with an official opening on Sunday, April 25, 2027. The limited run will play through Sunday, June 13, 2027.

Roundabout’s previously announced spring entry, a revival of The Full Monty, has been postponed due to cast availability and will be rescheduled at a later date (the company had not announced the cast).

The Paulus-directed Rhinoceros had its critically acclaimed world premiere this past summer at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University, and marks the first Ionesco play to be staged by the Roundabout.

Maslani will play Daisy, Shalhoub will play Jean and Turturro has been cast as Bérenger. In the landmark 1961 Broadway production, those roles were portrayed by, respectively, Anne Jackson, Zero Mostel and Eli Wallach. Mostel won a Tony Award for his performance, and reprised the role for Tom O’Horgan’s 1973 film adaptation co-starring Gene Wilder and Karen Black.

Complete casting for the Roundabout production will be announced later.

The creative team includes scenic design by Riccardo Hernández, costume design by Anita Yavich, lighting design by Jen Schriever, sound design by Fitz Patton, special effects design by Markus Maurette, hair & wig design by Tom Watson, make-up design by Kyle Krueger, fight direction by Thomas Schall and movement by Jill Johnson.

The synopsis: “Can you hear it? The stampede of hooves…the trumpeting of beasts… our friends and neighbors changing before our very eyes. Do we maintain our humanity, or join the herd?” The three primary cast members play “small-town friends and colleagues who find themselves facing a world-shaking new movement.”

Maslany, a 2016 Emmy winner for Orphan Black and more recently starring in Apple TV+’s drama series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, last appeared on Broadway in 2023’s Grey House and, before that, 2018’s Network.

Shalhoub, a multiple Emmy winner for Monk and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, won a 2018 Tony for The Band’s Visit. Other Broadway credits include Arthur Miller’s The Price, Lend Me a Tenor, Conversations with My Father, The Heidi Chronicles and others. He’ll next be seen on TV in CBS upcoming series Einstein.

Turturro won an Emmy for his guest performance in Shalhoub’s Monk, and has been nominated for The Night Of, Severance and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. His many films include Do the Right Thing, The Color of Money and the upcoming A Statement. His Broadway credits include Life (x) 3 in 2003 and Relatively Speaking in 2011.
