UT Austin announces new Karch Gaming Institute

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The University of Texas at Austin (UT) will soon unveil a new gaming institute to help students with careers in the video game industry.

“UT’s Moody College of Communication will be home to the Karch Gaming Institute, which will be dedicated to shaping the next generation of creative leaders in the gaming industry,” the university said.

UT said the Karch Gaming Institute would teach students about all aspects of the digital gaming industry, including:

  • Concept
  • Distribution
  • convergence of gaming with film, broadcast and other media

“Students will gain the skills and knowledge needed to thrive as leaders in the most profitable sector of entertainment,” UT said.

The university said the institute would also offer students a curriculum that “combines the rich history, cultural context, ethics and art of storytelling in gaming with practical and hands-on courses focused on the business and development workflows of the industry.”

UT’s Moody College of Communication said it was developing courses to create a minor focusing on the business and production of digital games.

Courses such as Business of Gaming: From Concept to Console and Gaming Usability Lab Fundamentals will be available beginning this fall for any UT student.
