Garrett Wilson makes admission regarding matchups with Christian Gonzalez

Garrett Wilson vs. Christian Gonzalez.

The New England Patriots and New York Jets will have no individual matchup mean more to the end result of their contest on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

Wilson will be relied upon to lead the charge for New York, as the club’s best available offensive weapon (Breece Hall has been out since Week 3) has accounted for one-third of their receiving production and half of their receiving touchdowns — par for the course.

Gonzalez will return to support a depleted secondary in New England, with his primary responsibility being what it always is — shut down the best guy on the other side of the football.

It’s fun to call it a battle, but one man is man enough to admit it has historically been anything but.

“I wouldn’t even say we’ve really had battles. He’s got the better of the matchup throughout these years for different reasons. He’s a really good player,” Wilson said this week, per team-provided video. “Every time I get to play against a top player in this league I’m excited for the opportunity. Yeah man, he’s a great player. I know him here and there off the field. Great dude. I think he just got signed there long-term so I look forward to keep getting to… go at each other throughout our careers. He’s a great player and like I said, as a competitor, I love the opportunity.”

Wilson has 15 receptions, 194 yards, and one touchdown in the three games in which he has played against Gonzalez — though that doesn’t mean they’ve always been matched up with one another. If anyone would know whether or not it has been a one-sided matchup, it would be him.

It’s interesting to hear a player admit as much, though. Perhaps he has something up his sleeve in their fourth matchup…
