Is Kim Jong-un Still Alive? Sister Kim Yo-jong and Daughter Ju-ae in Succession Focus Amid Health Rumors
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has become the subject of fresh speculation about his health after unverified claims circulating online alleged that he suffered a brain hemorrhage and was in a coma. Social media reports also said that he was in China when the incident took place and was rushed for emergency treatment.
However, there is no credible public evidence confirming that Kim has died or is in a coma, and neither North Korea nor China has officially acknowledged the reported medical emergency.
The rumors have renewed questions about who would lead North Korea if Kim became incapacitated or died. Attention has turned to his powerful sister, Kim Yo-jong, and his teenage daughter, Kim Ju-ae, whose increasingly prominent appearances alongside her father have fueled speculation about the country’s future leadership.
Is Kim Jong-un Still Alive? What We Know So Far
The latest rumors claim that Kim suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage and was transferred to Peking Union Medical College Hospital in Beijing for treatment. Some social media posts have gone further, alleging that he died and that a leadership transition has already taken place.
However, these claims have not been independently verified.
According to reports, Kim’s most recent reported public appearance was at the opening of North Korea’s Defence Revolution Museum on Oct. 11. State media images showed him attending the event alongside his wife, Ri Sol-ju, and daughter, Ju-ae. The photographs were published by North Korean state media in the following days.
Similar speculation surrounded Kim’s health in 2020, when his absence from public view prompted reports that he was gravely ill or had died.
Could Kim Jong-un’s Sister Take Over North Korea?
Kim Yo-jong is one of the most prominent figures in North Korea’s political establishment and has long been regarded as an influential member of her brother’s inner circle.
She has held senior roles within the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea and has frequently delivered forceful statements on behalf of the government, particularly concerning South Korea and relations with the United States. Her public position and access to the leadership have made her a central figure in discussions about a possible succession.
Who Is Kim Ju-ae?
Kim Ju-ae, Kim Jong-un’s daughter, has attracted growing attention after appearing alongside her father at major military and state events.
North Korean state media first publicly identified her in November 2022, when she appeared with Kim during a missile-related event. Since then, she has been seen accompanying him at weapons displays, military ceremonies and other high-profile engagements.
Her presence at these events has prompted analysts to consider whether the North Korean leadership is preparing her for a future role in the ruling dynasty.
In April 2026, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service assessed that Ju-ae appeared to be positioned as her father’s successor, according to reporting by Yonhap News Agency. The assessment was described as being based on intelligence rather than public appearances alone.
That assessment is significant, but it does not mean Ju-ae has been formally declared North Korea’s next leader. Pyongyang has not publicly announced a definitive succession arrangement naming her as the heir.
Her age would also make any immediate transition complicated. If Kim were suddenly unable to govern, the country could face a period in which senior political and military figures played an important role while questions about the longer-term leadership remained unresolved.
Kim Jong Un’s Repeated Illness Rumors
Kim’s health has attracted international attention because North Korea’s political system is highly centralized and its leadership succession remains closely guarded.
A sudden change at the top could have implications for the country’s domestic politics, military policy and relations with South Korea, China, Japan and the United States. North Korea’s nuclear weapons program makes the question of political continuity particularly important to regional security.
