Oregon Coach ‘in Tears’ After Team’s Upset Loss to Illinois

Oregon suffered a shocking loss to Illinois on Saturday, and one member of the coaching staff was really upset.

The Oregonian’s Ryan Clarke reported that Oregon wide receiver coach Ross Douglas was in tears coming off the field. Oregon lost to Illinois 21-10 and now has a 4-3 record.

Douglas was in tears not only because Oregon lost, but also because he knows that the team’s hopes for reaching the College Football Playoff are very low. Last season, the Ducks suffered one loss in the regular season and reached the College Football Playoff semifinals.

One big reason Oregon has struggled this year is that the team does not have its star quarterback. Dante Moore suffered a concussion against USC last month and has missed the last three games. With Moore out of the lineup, Oregon has a 1-2 record with losses to Illinois and UCLA.

Will Oregon make changes after the stunning loss to Illinois?

In those three games, Oregon has scored a combined 42 points. After the Illinois loss, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning spoke to reporters about the possibility of making a change at offensive coordinator.

“I think all things are on the table for us to make sure that we’re the best version of ourselves, and we’re currently not that,” Lanning said, per Clarke. “That’s very clear.”

Douglas is in his second season as Oregon’s wide receivers coach. He began his coaching career in 2018 as a graduate assistant and also spent time at Richmond, Syracuse, and the New England Patriots.

Douglas played college football at Michigan and Rutgers. He was with the Wolverines from 2013 to 2015 before spending his final two seasons with the Scarlet Knights. Douglas was undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft and had a tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers at rookie minicamp.
