Miami’s Malachi Toney ties ACC record held by Lions legend Calvin Johnson

Malachi Toney delivered another standout performance for the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday.

The sophomore wide receiver helped No. 1 Miami dominate Pittsburgh 52-23, producing a historic outing that placed him alongside one of college football’s most recognizable names.

Toney finished with 16 receptions for 194 yards and three touchdowns at Hard Rock Stadium.

His reception total set a new Miami single-game record, while his three scores continued an impressive season for the rising star.

ESPN Insights highlighted Toney’s achievement, reporting:

“Malachi Toney went for 194 yards with 3 TD in Miami’s win over Pitt today. It was his 5th career multi-TD game.”

The performance put Toney in rare company. According to the graphic shared with the report, he joined Calvin Johnson and Torry Holt as players to record at least 150 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns in a single season game in the ACC over the past 30 years.

Johnson accomplished the feat with Georgia Tech in 2006, while Holt did it with NC State in 1998.

Toney made his biggest impact early. He caught a 19-yard touchdown in the first quarter before breaking free for a 53-yard score in the second. He added an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap his afternoon.

Quarterback Darian Mensah was equally impressive, completing 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns. His connection with Toney proved too difficult for Pittsburgh to contain.

The win was especially significant because it marked Miami’s first game as the nation’s No. 1 team in nearly 24 years. The Hurricanes responded with a dominant performance that strengthened their position in the national title conversation.

Toney’s latest display suggests he is becoming one of the most dangerous receivers in the country. If he maintains this level of production, Miami’s offense will remain a major challenge for its remaining opponents.
