Trent McDuffie’s mysterious absence raises red flags for Rams

What initially appeared to be a minor injury for Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie is suddenly becoming a major concern this week.

McDuffie missed his second consecutive practice Thursday as the Rams prepare for Sunday’s pivotal matchup against the Commanders, raising questions about whether their All-Pro cornerback will be available.

The troubling development comes days after McDuffie took a knee to the back during the Rams’ 24-9 victory over the Chargers. He immediately headed to the locker room before eventually returning to the sideline.

On Monday, coach Sean McVay sounded optimistic.

“Trent obviously had the knee to the back. Came in feeling better than maybe what we expected,” McVay said. “We’ll monitor him as the week goes as well.”

McDuffie echoed that optimism.

“My back is feeling OK,” McDuffie said Monday. “I’m taking it one day at a time. … [The training staff is] going to make sure they do everything in their power to get me ready for this week.”

Three days later, that optimism is beginning to evaporate.

McDuffie was not spotted at the Rams’ facility Wednesday and was seen only briefly Thursday, walking slowly and gingerly through the locker room before leaving.

Sources told the California Post that McDuffie has been arriving at the facility in the mornings for treatment and is still expected to be available Sunday.

It’s possible the Rams are simply exercising caution, allowing their veteran cornerback to rest rather than risk aggravating his back.

Fellow injured starters Colby Parkinson (rib) and Kam Curl (foot) have remained visible around the facility despite missing practice. McDuffie’s absence has been noticeably different.

With Jaylen Watson already lost for the season following shoulder surgery, the Rams can hardly afford another blow to their secondary.

McDuffie previously missed games against the Cardinals and Raiders with a groin injury.

McVay is expected to provide an official game designation Friday, but McDuffie’s trajectory since Monday has hardly been encouraging. As the Rams try to resurrect their season and get back in the NFC playoff picture, another injury to a defensive cornerstone is the last thing they need.
