AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new high-tech manufacturing center completed construction in east Austin. The Hayes Innovation Center for Advanced Manufacturing (HICAM) is a 52,000-square-foot facility aimed at fostering modern innovation and increasing workforce development in manufacturing.

HICAM is the economic and workforce development nonprofit behind the project.

The facility will serve as a co-working space for startups. HICAM Executive Director Marcus Metzger said they’ll provide companies with the equipment to develop their technology in its early stages.

ACC partnership

The organization announced a partnership with Austin Community College (ACC) to expand the advanced manufacturing workforce training opportunities in the region. HICAM will help expand ACC’s Core Automation and Semiconductor (CAST) program.

ACC will deliver a tailored curriculum at HICAM’s newly completed facility, which is near Tesla’s Gigafactory.

“This premier training initiative equips students with the skills most in demand by the region’s growing manufacturing and semiconductor industries,” a press release said.

The HICAM facility has industrial space, machinery and dedicated areas for prototype development and testing.

Training for Tesla employees

Along with the CAST program, ACC’s Engineering Development Program (EDP) will also train at the location. According to a news release, the program provides customized training for Tesla employees.

“Set to launch In April, this collaboration prepares Tesla engineers for certification in essential motor control technologies,” the release said.
