'Surpasses anything we've had in the past': City of Elgin cuts ribbon on new police station

AUSTIN (KXAN) — After years of construction, the city of Elgin cut the ribbon on its new police station downtown Wednesday morning.

It is the city’s first police-designated building in its history, which replaced the 102-year-old building that previously housed the department.

The building was under construction for a little more than two years. Elgin’s Chief of Police, Chris Noble, said the building upgrade was long overdue.

“The technology that is built into the facility far surpasses anything we’ve had in the past. And with regard to evidence storage, investigations, interviews, video and just about anything that we need, we have now,” Noble told KXAN.

The new building takes up 11,000 square feet in the heart of downtown Elgin.

The city is right on the outskirts of Austin and serves as a popular stopping destination for people traveling between the state’s capital and Houston. It is now becoming a place to find affordable housing as more people moving into Central Texas look for a place to live.

City officials said they expect the population of 12,000 people to grow by about 6,000 more people in the next few years.

In the last five years, the population has grown from a little more than 10,000 to more than 12,000.

Additionally, Elgin is a “Texas Film Friendly Community.” This allows the city to have movies, commercial photo shoots, music videos, commercials and more, according to the city website.
