Funeral, procession Friday for APD Detective Israel Garcia
AUSTIN (KXAN) — A procession and funeral is set to take place Friday for Israel Garcia, an Austin Police Department detective who APD said died in an off-duty motorcycle crash over the weekend.
“People loved him. The community loved him. He was kind. The officers loved him,” said Chief Lisa Davis. “He was the officer that I would certainly want everyone to be. An officer who loved to talk. Loved to be in the community. He had a wonderful family. He will be greatly missed. Officers are devastated by his loss. It’s felt. It’s felt here. He was very well loved.”
The procession will begin at 7:50 a.m., with officers escorting Garcia’s body from a funeral home at 2222 and Mopac to the Bannockburn Church in south Austin.
The procession will take the following route, according to APD:
- Mopac to U.S. 290
- U.S. 290 to Interstate 35 South
- Slaughter Lane exit to Congress Avenue
- Ralph Ablanedo Drive to S. First Street toward William Cannon, then to Brodie Lane
Garcia’s final patrol will be called over the police radio at 8:15 a.m.
He has served the department since 2009.
