Man convicted in cousin's east Austin murder gets 20-year sentence



AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Travis County jury found a man guilty of murder May 27 in connection with a 2023 homicide investigation.

According to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, 37-year-old Elvin Salvador Tinoco-Orosco was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison for the death of his cousin, 38-year-old Jader Francisco Tinoco Salgado.

On Oct. 16, 2023, the Austin Police Department received a 911 call about a shooting in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 2200 block of East Riverside Drive. The DA’s office said the caller found an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound to the head and another person covered in blood.

APD officers performed life-saving measures on the shooting victim, but he later died from his injuries.

The DA’s office said witnesses saw the two men arguing in the parking lot before Tinoco-Orosco shot his cousin.

Police found a gun in the driver’s seat of Tinoco-Orosco’s vehicle, according the DA’s office. It was determined that the gun was used in the shooting.
