Red Sox Drop Vague Update on Marcelo Mayer Plans Once Alex Bregman Returns

The Boston Red Sox infield could get very complicated soon. Right now, Alex Bregman is injured, and Marcelo Mayer is playing in the hot corner.

Mayer is the No. 2 prospect in the organization and was primarily a shortstop in the minor leagues. Before he was called up, the Red Sox had Kristian Campbell working out at first base so Mayer could slot in at second base. However, Bregman’s injury opened a spot for Mayer at third base. Since then, Campbell has been sent down to figure some things out, but he, too, could still factor into the infield.

As long as Campbell is in the minors, the Red Sox do not have to worry much about where to play Mayer when Bregman returns. However, it may not be as simple as playing him at second base every day. Cora would not commit to playing Mayer at second base when Bregman returns, according to MassLive’s Christopher Smith.

“We’ll get there when we get there,” Cora said when asked if Mayer will play second base when Bregman is healthy.

The issue is likely that the Red Sox hope for Campbell to be back in the big leagues at some point. Campbell has already signed an extension with the team and figures to play a huge role in their future.

The Red Sox do have Campbell working at first base in the minor leagues. If he can return as a first baseman, Mayer could find a home at second base for now. In the offseason, the Red Sox could reassess their infield, Trevor Story’s role on the team and Bregman’s future.
