Malcolm-Jamal Warner Remembered By Angela Bassett, Yvette Nicole Brown, Sherri Shepherd & Tracee Ellis Ross: “His Light Will Remain In Our Hearts Always”

The news of the drowning death of The Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner hit Hollywood hard, with several of his onetime co-stars and collaborators across his five-decade career reacting to the news.

Warner died Sunday of an accidental drowning in Costa Rica at age 54.

The actor became a household name playing Theo Huxtable on NBC’s The Cosby Show, on which he starred for eight seasons and picked up an Emmy nomination in 1996. Later, his credits included starring alongside Eddie Griffin in Malcolm & Eddie and more recently Fox’s The Resident, along with series like Showtime’s Jeremiah and BET’s Reed Between the Lines with co-star Tracee Ellis Ross.

“Everyone at Fox is heartbroken by the tragic loss of our friend and colleague, the extraordinary Malcolm-Jamal Warner. While his iconic roles – from comedic to dramatic – are unforgettable and timeless, Malcolm will be remembered most for his warmth, kind heart and the lasting impact he had on his friends, family and fans everywhere. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones,” shared the network where Warner starred in The Resident for 6 seasons, an episode of Accused, with his final credits in the network’s Alert: Missing Persons Unit.

“Malcolm-Jamal Warner touched millions throughout his incredible four-decade career, including roles on Sons of Anarchy, American Horror Story, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, The Resident and 9-1-1. He made an indelible mark on television as we know it, infusing characters with tremendous humanity and heart. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this profoundly difficult time,” a statement from Disney Entertainment Television reads.

“I first met Malcolm-Jamal Warner over 25 years ago when we did Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. A man of deep goodness, warmth, talent, and charm. He challenged himself in music, art, cinema, spoken word and writing. We did Shakespeare together, crime drama and played dear friends on TV at one point,” said Wendell Pierce.

He added, “Art imitating life. Forever youthful, he had a huge capacity for joy but admonished those who did not afford him the respect he had earned with his work. He exercised his right of self-determination. A tragic loss of a man who demonstrated the best in our humanity.”

Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett also shared their memories of the late actor today.

“It is with such a heavy heart that we bid farewell to a man who was a friend and colleague to so many of us. When Malcolm was in the room, we all felt his good and kind spirit. He was not just a hard worker. He was a man with integrity and honor. He grew up in this business, serving as a beacon of possibilities for young people to see what it means to have this career and have a real life,” reflected Vance.

He continued, “In paying tribute to Malcolm, I believe the lyrics from the hymn, He’ll Understand and Say Well Done, are most fitting in honoring him on today:

“Oh, when I come to the end of my journey, Weary of life and the battle is won; Carrying the staff and the cross of redemption, He’ll understand and say, ‘Well done’…If when this life of labor is ended, And the reward of the race you have run; Oh! The sweet rest that’s prepared for the faithful, Will be their blest and last, ‘Well done.”

Rest in eternal peace, my good brother. We will always remember you! To Malcolm’s mother, wife, & family, you have our deepest condolences.”

Bassett shared, “When a special soul like Malcolm leaves us far too soon, words fail to adequately describe the unimaginable grief. Malcolm was more than a gifted actor; he was a longtime friend. When I met him, he was a star on the show that was TV royalty, The Cosby Show. He warmly embraced me as a working actor who was trying to find my way. Even in his youth, Malcolm’s empathy, quiet strength, and his bright light surrounded us all. Then to have the opportunity to work with him again last year on 9-1-1 was a memorable full-circle moment for us both.”

Adding, “In this life, Malcolm is what’s known as a soulful artist whose deep commitment to his craft left an impression on me that has never faded. He carried the weight of cultural legacy with grace, and he always made space for others to shine. His light will remain in our hearts always. My prayers are with you and yours. Rest in perfect peace until we meet again.”

Bryan Cranston, who worked with Warner in Prime Video’s Sneaky Pete, remembers their time together

“So saddened to hear of Malcolm’s tragic death. I came to know him when he was cast in my show, Sneaky Pete, where he played Giovanni Ribisi’s parole officer with such controlled power. He added layers of depth to the character that was not in the script. More important to his superb talent was that we all found him to be so fun and kind on the set. His good cheer and team-player attitude were greatly appreciated…and that generosity of spirit will be missed. Our condolences to his family,” said Cranston.

“I’m completely devastated over the passing of my friend Malcolm-Jamal Warner. He brought much laughter and gravitas playing my husband on my self-titled sitcom,” Sherri Shepherd shared. “He also made two appearances on my talk show, Sherri, most recently in April to promote his series Alert: Missing Persons Unit.

She added, “As someone who grew up on TV, Malcolm remained one of the most-grounded people I’ve ever met in our business. To know Malcolm was to know a renaissance man who possessed humor, grace, humility and deep cultural appreciation. He was just a good guy! His passing is a true loss to the Hollywood community. He was a proud girl dad and loved his daughter so much. To his family, friends and all who loved him—my heart is with you.”
