Paxton investigates Discord after it was used in Charlie Kirk assassination plot

AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Thursday, Attorney General Ken Paxton announced he would investigate the online chat platform Discord after it was used by 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson to confess to the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

Paxton also said he was looking into reports of the platform being addictive and exposing minors to sexual exploitation and extremist content.

KXAN has reached out to Discord for a statement regarding Paxton’s investigation. This story will be updated when or if we receive a comment from the online chat platform.

“I’m standing shoulder to shoulder with the Trump Administration to root out and defeat nihilistic violent extremism in all its forms,” said Paxton.

Back in December 2024, Paxton previously launched an investigation into Discord and 14 other companies, regarding privacy and safety practices for minors in accordance with the SCOPE Act and the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act.

Paxton, back in April, announced he was running against Republican Sen. John Cornyn for his seat in 2026.
