New Braunfels warns against email fraud targeting property owners
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of New Braunfels warned property owners about an email fraud scheme targeting those currently doing business with the city’s Planning and Development Services Department.
The city said over the past two days, several emails have gone out to property owners claiming to be from the city of New Braunfels.
The email claims to be a formal notice from the city about pending payments due for planning and development fees and includes an attachment with an official-looking invoice along with instructions to wire transfer the funds, according to the press release.
The city reassured residents this was a scam and not a legitimate email from the city. All planning and development fees are invoiced through an online system.
The city said it would not invoice property owners by email and would never require a wire transfer to pay for fees or other charges. Additionally, all emails coming from city employees will come from email addresses ending in @newbraunfels.gov, according to the press release.
If you think you may have received a fraudulent email, you are asked to contact the New Braunfels Planning and Development Services Department at 830-221-4069 to report the incident.
