This year’s race, kicking off the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series, faces similar worries about possible rain. Last year the race was delayed due to rainfall, but William Byron from Hendrick Motorsports emerged with the win. As the 2025 event nears, everyone involved is keeping a close eye on the sky, hoping for a smooth race without any further disruptions.

The Daytona 500 has a history of weather impacting the race, with rain affecting three out of the last five events: 2020, 2021, and 2024. For example, in 2020 the race was paused and continued the following day, and in 2024 this happened again. Given this history, NASCAR is being careful with its scheduling to avoid any major issues.

For 2025, the weather forecast suggests mild conditions with an 80-degree Fahrenheit temperature and 56% humidity. Although there’s a relatively low chance of rain at 20%, officials are concerned about the wind speed, predicted to average 18 miles per hour from the south.
Because of what’s possibly on the horizon, NASCAR plans to complete the 500-mile, 200-lap race before any rain hits the Daytona International Speedway. The race is scheduled at 1 p.m. CT on February 16th, aiming to beat any weather-related issues.
The Daytona 500 is not just another race; it signifies a new beginning for NASCAR each year. This year’s race at Daytona International Speedway, known for its 2.5-mile oval with steep 31-degree turns, is set up with three segments: 65 laps, 65 laps, and 70 laps. It attracts more than 100,000 fans to the track and millions who watch on various platforms.
Television coverage will be on FOX, and viewers can also stream it using the FOX Sports app, FUBO, or listen via SiriusXM on Channel 90.

Besides the thrill of the race itself, it provides substantial economic benefits. The track generates over $800 million annually for Daytona Beach’s economy, with this race being a major player in that figure.
As for safety and logistics, NASCAR relies on a specific protocol to handle weather issues. Wet-weather tires aren’t used here due to the high-speed nature of the track, so races are paused if the track gets too wet. If conditions don’t improve, they may decide to continue the race the next day. For 2025, if rain does happen, there’s a good chance for clear weather the following Monday to wrap up the race.
