Martha Stewart’s New ‘Mocha Mousse’ Hair Color Is the Best Way to Go Gray

It’s time to add gray hair coverage to the list of good advice from Martha Stewart. The OG influencer just jumped on the mocha mousse hair color trend, and her transformation is perfect for anyone who wants to start embracing gray hair.

Celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton—whose regular clients also include Jennifer Lopez and the Kardashian crew—just shared Stewart’s dimensional new color in an Instagram reel. And while the mogul has dabbled in every shade of blonde, from warm honey tones to her more recent platinum, her current look is a departure. While she hasn’t crossed over into brunette territory, the dark roots and grounded lowlights give her soft lob a totally different feel.

To keep Stewart’s hair feeling light and on brand, Appleton opted to keep a highlighted money piece framing her face while working more depth into the body. This dual-tone strategy is a common gray hair coloring technique: While a one-tone dye job (even a light one, like Stewart’s before’ blonde) draws attention to gray streaks and roots, a more dimensional approach can blend them seamlessly.

If you’re figuring out your gray hair journey, the mocha mousse color (which sits comfortably between blonde and brown) is a great option to try. “I would recommend getting strategic highlights and lowlights to diffuse and break up the hard gray line of demarcation that you so often see,” Jackie Seabrooke, hair artist at Kristen Ess, previously told Glamour. “If you are someone with really dark hair, you can also lighten your overall base color to have a more blended grow out.”

The darker tones used to create a mocha mousse effect work particularly well with naturally gray hair. They’re more soft and ashy than rich or saturated, which helps to subtly diffuse lighter streaks.
