Martin Short Doc ‘Marty, Life Is Short’ Sets May Launch On Netflix
Netflix announced on Tuesday morning that Marty, Life Is Short, a film billed as the definitive documentary on comedian Martin Short, will stream globally on May 12.
Pic is directed by Lawrence Kasdan, the filmmaker responsible for such classic films as The Big Chill, Body Heat, and The Bodyguard, among others. Producers included Sara Bernstein, Meredith Kaulfers, Christopher St. John, Justin Wilkes, Kasdan, and Blair Foster. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard exec produced, with their Imagine Documentaries as the production company.
Perhaps one of the most successful comedians of all time across film, television, theater and more, Short broke out with his Emmy-winning work on Canada’s SCTV, which brought him to the attention of the producers of SNL. While he was only there for a season, he became a fan-favorite for his portrayal of characters such as Ed Grimley, lawyer Nathan Thurm and “legendary songwriter” Irving Cohen.
Short’s sketch-world popularity quickly led him to cross over into feature films. He made his debut in Three Amigos, where he starred opposite Steve Martin and Chevy Chase, and followed that comedy up with turns in titles like Innerspace, Three Fugitives, Clifford, Pure Luck, Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks, and the Father of the Bride films.
In television, Short’s other credits include The Martin Short Show, Primetime Glick, Damages, and The Morning Show, to name just a few. Also accomplished stage actor, he won a Tony, a Theatre World Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for his role in the revival of Little Me, and is also known for productions like the musical version of Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl and Fame Becomes Me. Most recently, he appeared on Broadway in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play.
A two-time Emmy winner, Short is also known for specials like Netflix’s An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life, hosted with longtime friend and creative partner Steve Martin, which received four Emmy nominations in 2018. Martin and Short currently executive produce and star together in Only Murders in the Building, Hulu’s most-watched comedy series to date, which has won seven Emmys from 56 nominations and is ramping up for the launch of Season 6. Short has won multiple Actors Awards for his work there and is currently nominated for another two.
In 2025, Short hosted the new season of ABC’s Match Game, streaming now on Hulu. He is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners; Kasdan by CAA and Greenberg Glusker.
