49ers’ Kyle Shanahan plans to coach in preseason opener after car accident

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Saturday he plans to coach in the team’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday. Shanahan has been limited in practices but said he is nearly back to full strength after suffering multiple injuries in a car crash on July 14.

“As far as the important stuff, I feel it’s about 100%,” Shanahan said, per ESPN. “The biggest thing I have learned with this stuff is just when you deal with fatigue and headaches and stuff is if I kind of do everything, I kind of pay for it in some ways later. That’s like the routine that I found out. I really tried to eliminate stuff that I would say just the fake work stuff.”

Shanahan suffered a concussion, three broken ribs and a broken left hand in the car crash.

As part of his recovery, Shanahan said he limited how often he led team meetings and spoke to the media. He took a big step in his recovery by speaking to the media at the 49ers’ training camp on Saturday.

“I try not to come in here every single day because I feel like if I did, I wouldn’t be able to pull off my normal routine, which is watching hours and hours of tape and getting to walk through the night being able to watch stuff after that,” Shanahan said. “Eventually I will get there.”
