Meta’s New Instagram AI Image Tool Lasted Days Before User Outcry Shut It Down
Meta has withdrawn a newly introduced Instagram feature that allowed users to generate AI images based on public Instagram accounts. The social media giant has decided to reverse course just days after its debut amid mounting criticism over privacy and consent.
The tool was unveiled alongside Muse Image, the first image-generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs. Users could create images by tagging public Instagram accounts they wished to reference, a capability Meta had framed as a way to make AI creations more personal and social.
In a blog post announcing the change, Meta said, “Earlier this week, we announced that one way for people to generate images in Meta AI is by @-mentioning public Instagram accounts that they want to reference. Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.”
Privacy Concerns Spark Swift Backlash
The feature did not provide adequate notice or consent mechanisms for people whose images could be used.
Concerns quickly spread among creators, talent agencies and advocacy groups, with many warning that the tool could be misused to create nonconsensual or misleading images.
SAG-AFTRA, the union representing performers and media professionals, condemned the default opt-in approach, stating that anything other than a clear and conspicuous opt-in for these types of uses of Instagram users’ images is unacceptable.
Meta Presses Ahead With Other AI Tools
While removing the disputed capability, Meta is continuing to roll out other AI-powered editing features.
Instagram users in the US now have access to more than 30 new Story effects powered by Muse Image, as well as a redesigned editing interface that allows them to preview effects before applying them.
The company said these tools are intended to enhance, rather than replace, human creativity. Several of the new effects were developed in collaboration with Instagram creators.
In the US, we’ve added over 30 new effects that use the latest image generation capabilities from Meta AI. Meta AI has been developed to uniquely understand Instagram videos and photos and can interpret your photo’s scene — the lighting, composition, and subject — to make nuanced edits that feel natural and true to you. You can subtly enhance the lighting in your photos with an effect like Night Flash or Disposable, try on new looks with Puffer or Paper Doll, or turn your Instagram profile into a personalized keychain with IG Charms. If you don’t see an effect you love, you can create your own by typing in a prompt at the bottom of the composer.
Growing Scrutiny of AI and Consent
SAG-AFTRA welcomed Meta’s decision to discontinue the feature, with a union spokesperson saying, “With the dangers of nonconsensual digital replicas well known to all, a feature that encouraged that behavior is unwise. We appreciate its discontinuance.”
The episode highlights the increasing pressure on technology companies to ensure that AI features are built around clear consent and user control, especially when they draw on personal images shared on social media.
As generative AI tools become more sophisticated, the balance between innovation and privacy is likely to remain a central challenge for the industry.
