SoCal Man Killed Girlfriend, Her Lover Out of ‘Jealousy’ Despite Agreeing to an Open Relationship
A man who agreed to an open relationship with his girlfriend fatally shot her and her new lover inside their San Diego home in a crime motivated by jealousy, according to prosecutors.
Ryan Wesley Proffitt, 27, is accused of murdering his Navy sailor girlfriend, Courtney Chandler, 28, and Nicholas McClure, 27, at the couple’s home in a military housing complex in Ramona.
As reported by FOX 5 San Diego, prosecutors said Proffitt and Chandler had agreed to an open relationship. McClure, who had recently begun a relationship with Chandler, had been living with the couple for about a week and a half after Chandler brought him to the apartment.
Prosecutors allege Proffitt became increasingly jealous of the attention Chandler was giving McClure and gunned both of them down on Monday before dialing 911 and saying he had been involved in a “lovers’ quarrel.” When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man sitting on the steps at the military complex drinking a beer.
Deputy District Attorney Miriam Shoveal told the court that Proffitt told investigators he retrieved a firearm from a bedroom, loaded it and concealed it while planning to confront Chandler and McClure about the future of their relationship.
According to prosecutors, Chandler sent a text message to a friend shortly before the shooting, saying Proffitt had a gun. Prosecutors allege McClure charged at Proffitt during the confrontation, prompting Proffitt to shoot him three times before turning the gun on Chandler and shooting her multiple times.
Profitt pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder Thursday and is being held without bail. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
