Duck Friendship Helps Golden Retriever Cope With Anxiety: Viral Animal Story Explained
A golden retriever named Barley and a duck named Louie have become one of social media’s more unexpected feel-good stories, but the friendship behind the viral clips started with a much harder chapter for their family. Barley, who lives with owners Tori and Justin Cannarelli in Brookhaven, New York, was diagnosed with epilepsy in early 2024 after experiencing a string of seizures.
The Diagnosis and Its Side Effects
The medication prescribed to control Barley’s seizures worked, stopping the episodes as intended. But it came with a cost the family hadn’t fully anticipated. “She lost her goldenness, her fun, her spunk,” Tori Cannarelli said. The once playful, high-energy dog spent most of her time sleeping or moping around the house, a common but difficult side effect of long-term anti-seizure medication in dogs.
“We thought, oh man, this medication we have to give her for the rest of her life,” Justin Cannarelli said. “So this is how she’s going to be.”
How Louie Entered the Picture
The shift began in May 2024, when the Cannarellis brought home a 4-day-old Pekin duckling. The family had initially been connected to the duckling through a Facebook post from a local elementary school teacher looking to rehome a pair of ducklings hatched in her classroom, intending to pass him along to a garden center. Instead, Tori brought him home, and Barley immediately took an interest.
“They fell in love with each other instantly,” Cannarelli said. “It was the weirdest thing.” Within weeks, the two were inseparable, and Barley’s family began noticing real changes in her behavior. “She started smiling again,” Tori said. “She started wagging her tail. She started having personality again.”
Why the Bond Formed So Easily
Experts who study animal behavior point to a few possible explanations for why the friendship took hold so naturally. Very young animals give off scent cues that can trigger nurturing instincts in adult animals, particularly females, which may explain why Barley treated the days-old duckling with gentleness rather than predatory interest. Golden retrievers, as a breed, were also historically bred to retrieve gently rather than hunt, making them generally more receptive to cross-species relationships than higher-prey-drive breeds. Cannarelli has also floated a simpler theory: that Barley, without other dogs to socialize with regularly, may have simply been lonely.
A Life Now Fully Intertwined
Louie lives in an outdoor enclosure complete with a small pool and a shed, but Barley regularly tries to sneak him into the house. Louie, in turn, has taken on some distinctly un-duck-like habits of his own, including insisting on eating out of a dog bowl rather than a standard duck feeder. Their daily routines, wrestling, splashing through puddles, exploring the yard together, have become the basis for the family’s Instagram account, which has drawn more than 200,000 followers since its August 2024 launch.
Why the Story Resonates
Viewers have gravitated toward the account in large numbers, with individual clips drawing millions of views and thousands of comments. Much of that response points to something beyond simple cuteness: an appreciation for how the friendship illustrates the emotional, not just physical, side of caring for a chronically ill pet. Managing Barley’s epilepsy meant more than stopping her seizures; it also meant paying attention to a decline in her quality of life that medication alone couldn’t fix.
A Broader Lesson for Pet Owners
Veterinary behavior specialists note that enrichment, social connection and mental stimulation all play meaningful roles in supporting a pet’s emotional wellbeing during long-term medical treatment, alongside whatever physical treatment a condition like epilepsy requires. While adopting a duck isn’t a realistic option for most pet owners managing a similar situation, Barley’s story has been held up as an example of how unexpected forms of companionship can meaningfully support an animal’s recovery.
