Portuguese soccer star Quévin Castro died after collapsing during a friendly match in Portugal Saturday. He was 25. The midfielder collapsed during a match between his club, third-tier Portuguese team Real Sport Clube, and Estrela da Amadora at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira. He was taken to a hospital but later died.

The Lisbon Football Association and Real Sport Clube confirmed Castro’s death on Saturday. “Quevin Castro was far more than a player, he was a member of our family, leaving a mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing him, both on and off the pitch,” Real Sport Clube said in a social media post, per AP.

Gone too Soon

The Lisbon Football Association also shared its condolences on Facebook, saying: “To the family, friends, and the affiliated club [Real Sport Clube], we extend our deepest condolences during this tragic time for Portuguese football.”

Castro began his senior career in England after joining West Bromwich Albion as a teenager in 2021. He made his first-team debut that August, coming up against Arsenal in a Carabao Cup tie. He later made a league appearance for the Baggies before moving on to gain more experience elsewhere.

During his time in England, Castro spent periods on loan with Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead. He then joined York City in 2023, where he became part of the club’s squad for the 2023-24 campaign.

The midfielder made 15 appearances for York before leaving the club and eventually returning to his native Portugal.

His former clubs remembered him fondly following news of his death. West Bromwich Albion said it was “devastated” to learn of his untimely passing and announced plans to honor him during its match against Burnley.

The club said its players would wear black armbands and hold a period of applause in the 25th minute, a tribute reflecting Castro’s age.

Tributes Pour In

Castro’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the clubs and communities he was part of during his career in both England and Portugal. West Bromwich Albion honored Castro during Sunday’s match against Burnley, with the club planning a special tribute to mark his passing.

Players wore black armbands, while supporters joined in a minute of applause during the 25th minute to remember the 25-year-old midfielder.

The club also shared a message of support for those closest to Castro, saying: “The thoughts of everyone at Albion are with Quevin’s loved ones at this desperately sad time.”
