A Career Built on Recovery: Inside John Merola’s Path From Chronic Pain to Regenerative Medicine with RejuvStem
For patients living with degenerative spine and joint conditions, the standard course of treatment has long followed a narrow path. Physical therapy and medication manage symptoms for a time, and when pain persists, surgery is often presented as the remaining option. That limited menu of choices has left an opening for regenerative medicine, a field centered on the idea that the body’s own cellular repair processes, properly.
y supported, can address damage that conventional treatment is not built to reverse. As the field has grown, it has drawn in an unusual class of leadership: executives who were once patients themselves, and who entered the business only after their own recovery convinced them of its value.
John Merola followed that path to RejuvStem, a regenerative medicine company operating clinics in Cancun, Mexico, and preparing to open a stem cell manufacturing lab near Miami called Auragenesis Labs, Inc. John now serves as the company’s chief operating officer and a partner in the business, a role he came to only after seeking treatment there as a patient.
John Merola’s earlier career was in real estate, working alongside his father. He had been accepted to law school in Illinois but declined the opportunity in order to continue working with him. His father later died of a heart attack connected to complications including high blood pressure and sleep apnea, a loss that would eventually inform Merola’s outlook on his own work.
In the years that followed, John dealt with chronic pain stemming from herniated and bulging discs, scoliosis and a torn tricep, limitations severe enough to interfere with ordinary movement and time spent with his children. Surgeons had recommended spinal fusion, a procedure John approached with hesitation after learning of inconsistent outcomes among others who had undergone it.
A friend, a professional wrestler from WWE, Ettore Ewen (Big E), who had previously sought treatment at RejuvStem’s Cancun clinic, suggested John consider the same option rather than proceed directly to surgery. John traveled to the clinic and underwent a series of stem cell injections targeting his spine, neck and tricep (which he tore a month before) Within a day, he experienced a noticeable improvement in neck mobility that had not been possible in the preceding months, a change that prompted him to reassess both his physical condition and his professional direction
Following his recovery, John contacted RejuvStem founder Chirag Shah, who had established the company five years earlier after a close friend recovered from severe respiratory complications after suffering from the coronavirus through similar treatment. John Merola joined shortly afterward as a partner, moving from patient to executive within the same organization that had treated him.
RejuvStem currently operates two clinics in Cancun, Mexico, including an aesthetics-focused facility and a second clinic located in Puerto Cancun dedicated to advanced regenerative medicine treatments delivered through injection and intravenous protocols. The company positions itself as the worldwide leader in DeZawa Muse cell treatments and is the only clinic in the world with both human Regenerator technology and DeZawa Muse cell treatments available at its Mexico facility, creating a unique platform for advanced regenerative therapies.
RejuvStem has also established a partnership with Micah Parsons of the Green Bay Packers, further expanding the company’s profile and reach within the professional sports and performance community.
In addition, the company’s planned Auragenesis laboratory near Miami, in partnership with Longeveron, is expected to open within the next one to two months. The facility is intended to expand RejuvStem’s manufacturing capabilities for DeZawa Muse cells and ultimately extend access to regenerative treatments through affiliated clinics across the United States, where allogeneic stem-cell therapies are permitted at the state level.
John Merola now works alongside Chirag Shah on both the company’s existing clinical operations and its broader expansion, a role shaped directly by the outcome of his own treatment.
