Amazon Boeing 767 Cargo Plane Overshoots Runway and Crashes at Miami Airport, Killing at Least Five and Injuring Five

A huge Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport, leaving at least five people dead after it erupted in smoke and crashed through vehicles on a nearby road, officials said, with terrifying video capturing the incident. The crash happened around 2 p.m. Sunday when Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767 operated by 21 Air, was landing from Puerto Rico.

The Amazon plane veered off the runway, slammed into “multiple vehicles” and then burst into flames, officials said. Distressing audio captured first responders scrambling to put out the massive fire moments after the cargo plane overshot the runway and crashed into cars on the busy nearby road.

Shocking Moment of Death

Five people were confirmed dead and five others were injured, including three who were in critical condition, after the shocking crash, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

It was not immediately clear how the deaths and injuries were divided between the plane’s crew and people who were hit by the wreckage.

The plane’s two pilots appeared to be among those injured and were reportedly taken to a nearby hospital along with the other three victims, NBC 6 reported.

Terrifying footage from the crash showed the massive jet tipping onto its side as flames engulfed the wreckage and thick clouds of black smoke rose into the sky. People nearby could only watch in horror.

“Oh my God!” bystanders could be heard shouting in one clip as the wreckage burned. Other videos showed officials urging people to move back as emergency crews rushed toward the blazing crash site.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the plane struck “multiple vehicles” during the crash. The department said 60 units were sent to the scene, where emergency personnel were “assessing patients.”

“Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing,” the agency said in a statement.

Reason Behind Crash Under Investigation

Despite the severity of the crash, the plane appeared to be largely intact as it came to rest on the roadway. Several semis were also seen stopped nearby, though it was unclear whether any of them had been hit.

A ground stop was put in place across the airport immediately after the crash, and all runways were closed as emergency crews worked at the scene.

More than three hours later, only two of the airport’s runways had reopened.

“We’re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss.”

Cava also offered her condolences to the victims’ families and thanked the first responders. “I am grateful to our Miami-Dade Fire Rescue teams and all the first responders who rushed to the scene,” the mayor said. “Our community stands together tonight with all those impacted as we continue to learn more.”

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Sunday’s tragedy is the latest in a series of incidents involving cargo planes running into trouble near major airport runways over the past year.

In November, a UPS cargo plane erupted in flames while taking off from Louisville‘s Muhammad Ali International Airport. The fiery crash was captured in shocking dashcam footage from a nearby truck.

Then, in May, a truck traveling on the Jersey Turnpike was struck by a plane that was coming in too low while landing at Newark International Airport.
