Andy Reid gets honest about Patrick Mahomes’ Week 1 status

The Kansas City Chiefs finally have star quarterback Patrick Mahomes back on the practice field.

The Chiefs’ medical staff and Dr. Dan Cooper, the Dallas Cowboys’ head team physician who performed the surgery to repair the torn ACL and LCL in the quarterback’s left knee, cleared Mahomes on Wednesday to fully participate in camp. Finally cleared, Mahomes said he’s feeling better than ever.

“I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt, as far as strength and lifting [weights],” Mahomes said Friday. “I feel amazing. … I’m excited just to be able to play football. I’ve been seeing cinderblock walls rehabbing every single day in Kansas City. Now, to be on that practice field with my teammates, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

But head coach Andy Reid pumped the breaks a bit. He admitted the team still hasn’t made an official decision on whether or not Mahomes will start Week 1.

“He’s been working so hard that you have a pretty good feel that he’s in a good place,” Reid said of Mahomes. “We’ve got to see how things go and not make any predictions about [Week 1].”

Kansas City is slated to face off against the Denver Broncos on Monday, Sept. 14, which gives the star quarterback a few extra days to be cleared for regular season play.
