I, for one, have made up my mind on Alberta separation. I intend to vote to stay in Canada. Things would be totally different if we were voting on ‘Western’ separation but alas, Alberta going it alone is just a bad idea. If the vote included Saskatchewan, B.C. and possibly Manitoba as well as Alberta, that would be a different can of worms but Alberta on its own? No way! We’d be a pariah in our own land with hypothetical enemies on all sides. In my view the only friend we’d have is the Americans, and, as history has shown, their friendship comes with not just strings attached but with steel cables welded around the neck. No, there’s just too much uncertainty surrounding going it alone. Better the devil you know than diving into the well of trying to start a new country.

(B.C. would be a tough one to convince)
Criticism unwarranted
(Re: ‘Educated risk,’ Sun, July 14) Does Kent Wilson have a good word to say about anyone or anything pertaining to the Flames? Nemec hasn’t played a game here yet, but Mr. Wilson sees fit to trash the person and the player, as well as Craig Conroy. Maybe his questionable writing skills and opinion would be better served somewhere else, maybe The Centre of the Universe? I have no respect for someone who has only been around hockey for a cup of coffee. Let’s see what Nemec brings to the table first before burning him in oil.

BRUCE HAYNES
(He said Nemec has ‘struggled at the NHL level so far,’ but ultimately called the deal a worthwhile gamble for the Flames. That’s hardly ‘burning him in oil’)

Already PM Carney with your talk of building Canada faster, stronger with capital projects approved by your government. So far nothing has happened. It takes the private sector to get the ball rolling financially, not a bloated reactionary debt ridden bureaucracy with nothing on line. Just re-election. Congratulations to Pembina, Meta and Sturgeon County in the province of Alberta with your recent AI data center announcement. This is building faster and stronger now Mr. Carney.
DARYL COTE
(Well, Carney wasn’t exactly absent from the Pembina pipeline hullaballoo)
