I am no separatist; however, I do support democracy and open debate. I am concerned when I read Naheed Nenshi and his NDP would summarily shut down any discussion or vote on Alberta separation. It is not democratic. Just because you don’t like the question doesn’t mean it should not be openly discussed and balloted. One would hope personal hatreds were not part of a political debate, but more and more I see personal interest outweigh objective and reasoned discussion. Whether it be gay rights, drug consumption sites, environment or separation, all should be openly debated. Why be afraid of a vote if you believe it will not succeed? What will suffer is voters’ chance to offer their opinion and vote. Albertans will get more out of conversation than confrontation. I would have hoped Nenshi and the NDP would support open discussions and not fear-mongering.

TOM BURNS

(Sounds like Nenshi has an issue with the petition, not necessarily the debate)

Why not privatize the army?

We should privatize the army. People whine all the time about how Canada Post loses billions every year, but so too does the army. Since we are now treating all government services as businesses, why not the army? The army has never, in the history of its entire existence, made a profit. Any services they provide should be ignored under the framing that they must, like all entities, become a profit-making business. Imagine how many tax dollars could be saved if the army were privatized?

(In all seriousness, Canada Post needs to change because of a changing industry)

Thumbs up, McDavid

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is a shining star related to highlighting the courage of so many NHL players who sustain an injury but keep on playing due to love of the game and their fans. Connor played through the 2026 NHL playoffs with a fracture in his foot/ankle area sustained in Game 2 against Anaheim Despite significant pain and limited mobility affecting sharp turns and stops he played all six games averaging over 23 minutes of ice time per game Thumbs up for you, Connor McDavid.

PETER J MIDDLEMORE

(There’s no questioning his commitment)

Not our problem

I along with most sane people are tired of hearing the argument that sending an immigrant who has committed a crime in Canada would be in danger if he or she were deported. Our concern should simply be, they may commit another crime in Canada, so why endanger our population?

J.D. ROUND, Brooks.

(Some folks in our justice system seem to have trouble seeing the forest for the trees)
