City, APD to provide details on explosive detonation in south Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — City of Austin leaders on Thursday are set to host an 11 a.m. press conference to provide an update on explosives detonated in the 2400 block of Vintage Stave Road in south Austin.

The city emphasized that the incident was not related to the northwest Austin explosion on Sunday. They also said there was no current threat to the public.

Speakers for the press conference will include City Mayor Kirk Watson and Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, according to a city press release.

On Tuesday, APD responded to a call about a possible explosive device found in a south Austin home. After further investigation, on Wednesday, the Austin Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) determined the best course of action was to safely detonate the explosives on site.

Just after 5 p.m., the explosives were detonated safely, however, it left the home severely damaged and caused minor damage to a nearby home, according to APD.

APD said one person has been detained as a result of the investigation.
