Colorado’s Deion Sanders emerges as candidate for elite coaching job

Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes have not put together a great 2025 season so far. Through the first seven games of the season, the team has mustered up a 3-4 record.

Coming into the year, there were a lot of questions surrounding the program and Sanders. How would the popular head coach fare without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter leading the way? At this point, things have gone about as expected.

Looking into the future, Sanders will have an uphill battle ahead of him to build Colorado up to being a true contender.

With that in mind, some rumblings have come out throughout the season about Sanders potentially being an option for other teams who are making coaching moves. He has been connected as a possible candidate for a few different jobs.

That being said, a new potential landing spot has been suggested for Sanders.

Bill Bender of The Sporting News has named Sanders as one of the candidates who could replace Mike Norvell as the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles. There is no guarantee that Norvell would be fire, but Sanders would be a surprising option. Of course, Sanders played his college football at Florida State.

“Sanders, 58, is one of the most-iconic players in program history. While the thought of Coach Prime coming back to Tallahassee is entertaining, it seems unlikely,” Bender wrote. “He’s 16-16 at Colorado since taking over in 2023. He did land five-star recruit Travis Hunter at Jackson State — and that ability to recruit the occasional five star and work the transfer portal might translate at Florida State better.”

Even though he listed Sanders as a possible name to watch, Bender acknowledged that it’s unlikely the Seminoles would roll with Sanders as their next head coach. He simply hasn’t had enough success as a college head coach to warrant that move.

Throughout his six seasons as a college coach so far, Sanders has compiled a 43-22 career record. As Bender noted, he has gone just 16-16 at Colorado.

More than likely, Sanders will simply remain the lead man for the Buffaloes. He could become a coach of intrigue for a few programs, but Florida State seems more likely to go in a different direction.
