Couple Survives Maui Shark Encounter

A couple kayaking off the coast of Olowalu in Maui reportedly fought off a tiger shark during a terrifying encounter that unfolded in shallow waters near the popular West Maui coastline on Saturday.

The incident occurred while the pair was enjoying the ocean near Olowalu, an area known for its clear waters and marine life. The shark suddenly approached their kayak, creating panic as the animal circled dangerously close.

According to witnesses and local authorities, the couple attempted to keep the shark away by using paddles and aggressively striking the water after the animal made repeated approaches toward them.

The tiger shark came within feet of the kayak, forcing the pair into survival mode as they tried to stay balanced and avoid falling into the ocean.

Officials later stated that the couple managed to fend the shark off far enough to safely return toward shore without suffering major injuries.

According to ocean safety officials, tiger sharks are commonly found in Hawaiian waters and can become more active in certain coastal conditions.

Authorities reminded residents and tourists to remain alert while participating in ocean activities, particularly in areas where visibility changes or marine wildlife activity increases.

No beach closures were immediately announced following the encounter, although officials continued monitoring the area after the frightening incident.

While shark incidents remain relatively rare in Hawaii, the close call once again highlighted the unpredictable nature of ocean wildlife around the islands.
