David Henrie Says ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ Season 2 Finale Was “Misunderstood” & Series Would “Never” Kill Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo
David Henrie is clearing up the Season 2 finale of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, which confused some fans over what really happened to Selena Gomez‘s Alex Russo.
Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place spinoff is ending its run with a shortened four-episode third season. The sophomore season ended as Alex jumped into a portal to defeat evil Lord Morsus, and many interpreted this as the character sacrificing her life.
“This is what I love about X,” Henrie said in an interview with People. “One person watches the end, probably skips right to the end, takes a video or a picture of the end, and puts it online and is like, ‘Alex is dead.’ Then, suddenly, it’s trending, and everyone’s like, ‘How could they kill her?’”
With the final season upon us, Henrie teased that fans will “learn about” what happened to Alex, but killing off the character is not something they would ever do.
“Never in our wildest dreams did we think we were killing Alex Russo,” he explained. “If you actually watch it, she gets sucked into a void, and that’s it. Doesn’t mean she’s dead. She didn’t get incinerated or mauled on camera. She got sucked into a place.”
The final season of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place sees Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) still reeling from losing Alex [Gomez] at the end of Season 2, and she discovers that the only way to rescue her mother is to reunite with her long-lost father. As her family bands together to find Alex, Billie realizes that their combined power is the only way the Russos can defeat the evil plaguing them.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place also stars Alkaio Thiele (Roman Russo), Max Matenko (Milo Russo), Taylor Cora (Winter) and Mimi Gianopulos (Giada Russo). Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas serve as writers and executive producers, along with executive producers Gary Marsh, Jonas Agin, Rick Williams, Gomez and Henrie.
