Director Thomas Zimny Signs With UTA
EXCLUSIVE: Director Thomas Zimny has signed with UTA for representation in all areas, pairing the Emmy and Grammy winner with the topflight global talent, entertainment, sports, and advisory company.
“Widely regarded as one of the definitive music documentarians of his generation, Zimny has built a celebrated career directing, producing, and editing intimate portraits of some of the most influential artists in modern culture,” notes a release.
Zimny’s recent projects include Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, which premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival before debuting on Hulu and Disney+; the Netflix documentary SLY, about the career and life of Sylvester Stallone, which closed the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, and Willie Nelson & Family, co-directed with Oren Moverman, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Alongside Frank Marshall, Zimny co-directed The Beach Boys for Disney+.
He’s currently working on an untitled project with Imagine Entertainment.

Zimny has enjoyed a collaboration with Bruce Springsteen going back more than two decades, “creating a body of work that has become essential to the artist’s cinematic legacy.” He won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for Springsteen on Broadway. He also directed the Apple TV+ documentary Letter To You, capturing Springsteen and the E Street Band recording their 2020 album of the same name. Zimny also co-directed Western Stars with Springsteen, which premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and screened as an official selection at the BFI London Film Festival.
Zimny won a Grammy Award in 2007 for Wings for Wheels: The Making of ‘Born to Run,’ which he directed and produced. He likewise directed 2010’s The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, which premiered at TIFF and later aired on HBO. He has directed multiple music videos for Springsteen, as well as for Bob Dylan and The Low Anthem.
Additional directing credits for Zimny include The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash, which premiered internationally at CPH:DOX, and HBO’s two-part documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher, which premiered at SXSW in 2018.
In addition to his directing work, Zimny edited three seasons of HBO’s acclaimed drama series The Wire from creator David Simon. Zimny continues to be represented by Artists First and Chris Perez at Donaldson Callif Perez.
