Famed artist and LA punk legend Raymond Pettibon feted at Sotheby’s dinner in Beverly Hills
In the ’80s, artist Raymond Pettibon stood at the forefront of counterculture, creating the cover images for such albums as Black Flag’s “Family Man” (disturbing!) and Sonic Youth’s “Goo” (iconic). On Thursday, the famed SoCal artist was celebrated by Sotheby’s, with an exclusive exhibition and intimate dinner at Marea in Beverly Hills.
The Hermosa Beach native rose to prominence amid the nascent LA punk scene — spawning album covers and fliers for groups on SST Records, the pioneering indie label owned and operated by his older brother and Black Flag founder, Greg Ginn.
Pettibon later became a blue chip artist with work shown at MoMA and the Whitney. His work, “No Title (Let him come…),” sold for $3.4 million at auction in 2021.
Sotheby’s and Forward Global threw a Thursday bash to celebrate the launch of LITO Editions’ Raymond Pettibon Collection, as well as featured works by fellow artists Oscar Murillo, Kehinde Wiley and Peter Halley.
The mix of collectors, Hollywood creatives and cultural tastemakers at the event included Atarah Valentine, Alexandra Meyers, Ashley Hansen, Kyle Boulia, Max Michael, Tim Blum, Adam and Emma Zhu, Kevin and Sue Wall, Alexis Woodall, Seanne Winslow, Constanze Nogler and Heather McDonald.
