First Warning: Extreme wildfire risk on Tuesday

AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Tuesday, a cold front will sweep through Central Texas with scattered showers. Behind that front, winds will shift to the west and gust up to 50 mph throughout the day. Relative humidity is forecast to drop to 5-15% by the early afternoon hours with high temperatures in the 70s and low 80s.

The ground is already drier than normal, with portions of Travis, Bastrop, Hays, Blanco, Burnet, Llano and Gillespie Counties under an extreme drought. For context, looking at 180-day rainfall anomalies, Camp Mabry is -8.9 inches below normal (HRAP 4 km).

The Texas A&M Forest Service has issued a level 5/5 ‘extreme’ fire danger for most of the KXAN viewing area on Tuesday.
