Glen Powell & Edgar Wright Electrify CinemaCon With First Footage From ‘The Running Man’

Glen Powell and director Edgar Wright was in town today for Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation which featured the first footage from Edgar Wright’s Stephen King adaptation The Running Man.

Co-stars Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo were also in tow.

The Running Man is set in an oppressive future where the government controls the media. The story follows Ben Richards (Powell) as he volunteers to participate in a deadly game show, which will see him hunted by professional killers over 30 days. Should he survive, he’ll win a cash prize that will help save his sick child and lift his family out of a horrid living situation.

“We literally just finished shooting less than a week ago,” said Wright.

Domingo, who is the announcer in the movie, set up the clip. It’s sleek and futuristic. Interesting to note per Wright, that Stephen King, then writing as Richard Bachman, set the original book in 2025. Trailer opens in a dystopian dumpy metro future. Josh Brolin’s exec is talking Powell’s family man into competing in the world’s biggest reality show (“You’re a fighter, Richards”). The difference between this Running Man and the Arnold Schwarzenegger, this one takes place out in the real world with Powell’s Richards on the run in an apartment building, getting assaulted by pilots, and juggling grenades thrown at him. Says Domingo’s emcee “The thrill of the hunt! Can you feel it?! This is America goddamit and we don’t put up with no bullshit.” “I’m still here, you shiteaters!” screams Powell toward end of footage.

Powell’s casting was first revealed at last year’s Paramount CinemaCon show. Also starring are William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra and Jayme Lawson with Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin.

Par has a November 7 domestic release date set. Producers are Simon Kinberg, Nira Park and Wright.
