Chris Langham, the British actor and writer best known for playing hapless Cabinet minister Hugh Abbot in the BBC political satire The Thick of It, died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 77, it has been revealed.

Langham died on June 24, 2026, but news of his death only became public on Sept. 3, almost three months later. His cause of death and the fact that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer were disclosed in an obituary published by The Times. The newspaper reported that Langham spent his final years largely away from the spotlight.

Langham’s acting career was split into two completely contrasting phases: an award-winning phase of a comedy actor and scriptwriter culminating in Langham’s BAFTA-winning performance, and a scandal involving his arrest for possession and downloading of images depicting child sexual abuse, which effectively marked the end of his career in mainstream television.

Who Was Chris Langham?

Born on April 14, 1949, in London, Langham began his career as a comedy writer before becoming an actor and performer.

He worked with comedy legend Spike Milligan and was also a writer on The Muppet Show. He later appeared in the BBC sketch series Not the Nine O’Clock News and had a small role in Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

His breakthrough came with Armando Iannucci’s political satire The Thick of It, in which he played Hugh Abbot, an increasingly overwhelmed government minister who was routinely subjected to abuse from Peter Capaldi’s Malcolm Tucker.

The role became the defining performance of Langham’s acting career.

Chris Langham Won a BAFTA for ‘The Thick of It’

Langham won the 2006 BAFTA Television Award for Comedy Performance for playing Hugh Abbot in The Thick of It. BAFTA’s official records list Langham as the winner, with Peter Capaldi also nominated for the same series.

The same year, Help, which Langham worked on with Paul Whitehouse, won the BAFTA for Comedy. Langham therefore had two major BAFTA successes connected to his work that year, but the individual Comedy Performance award was specifically for his performance in The Thick of It.

The Case that Brought an End to His Acting Career

Langham was just a few days away from his BAFTA award ceremony for his performance in best comedy when he was arrested for downloading and possessing images of child sexual abuse. On August 2, 2007, Langham was convicted of 15 counts. Sentenced to jail for ten months, this sentence was cut down to six months upon appeal; Langham had to register himself as a sex offender and also had to ensure that he did not work with children for ten years.

During his trial, Langham stated that he had looked into the matter out of curiosity for writing a comedy project. He maintained that he did not have any sexual attraction towards children. In a 2015 interview with The Independent newspaper, Langham admitted his mistake, stating that he had been punished “quite correctly” for his deeds. Paul Fotheringham, Detective Superintendent with Kent Police, the man who had investigated the case, said in a press conference that he considered Langham to be a pedophile.

Langham was married twice. His second wife was theatre director and choreographer Christine Cartwright, also known as Chrissie. The couple had two children, Emily and James.

Langham also had three children from his first marriage to actress Sue Jones-Davies, making him the father of five. Recent obituaries report that his family remained supportive of him following the collapse of his career.
