Lando Norris is on the pole for this race and will look to build on his 24-point lead in the driver’s championship race over his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri. Piastri led for much of the season, but Norris has come on strong recently, winning the past two races and finishing ahead of Piastri in six consecutive races.
Piastri has to keep an eye over his shoulder, because his positioning in second place is in danger as well. Defending champion Max Verstappen, who starts second on Saturday night, is closing in on Piastri thanks to a strong recent run.
Williams driver Carlos Sainz Jr. scored a surprise third-place starting spot in qualifying, while Mercedes’ George Russell starts beside him on Row 2. Piastri starts fifth beside Liam Lawson, who has really turned up his performance recently for Racing Bulls. Fernando Alonso, Isack Hadjar, Charles Leclerc, and Pierre Gasly round out the top 10 starting spots.
Notable drivers who missed the final round of qualifying include Alex Albon (16th), Andrea Kimi Antonelli (17th), and Lewis Hamilton (20th).
