Illegal Immigrant Shot and Killed By ICE Agents Was 26-Year-Old Colombian National Who Was Ordered to Leave US
A Colombian migrant was shot and killed in front of his toddler daughter in her pajamas on Monday after he allegedly tried to run over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Maine, authorities said.
The man, whose identity has not yet been revealed, was legally authorized to work in the United States and had a Social Security number. However, he was also under a final order of removal requiring him to leave the country, according to reports. The illegal migrant was the subject of the ICE operation on Monday morning and was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant before the encounter turned deadly, according to Maine Sen. Angus King.
No Tolerance from ICE
It is unclear when or why the deportation order was issued. The incident unfolded early morning on Monday in Biddeford. According to an eyewitness, the driver ignored repeated commands from officers before accelerating toward them, prompting authorities to open fire.
As investigators worked to identify the man, videos circulating on social media showed a white Kia sedan slowly driving in circles while being chased by law enforcement officers.
Graphic footage shared online later showed the man lying next to the vehicle, which had what appeared to be a bullet hole through the driver’s side of the front windshield, following the shooting at around 7:15 a.m., the Portland Press Herald reported.
Witnesses said the unidentified driver accelerated toward ICE agents at an intersection in the small Maine town moments before officers fatally shot him. Lucas Scott, 18, told reporters that officers wearing green tactical vests had surrounded the vehicle with their weapons drawn when the driver appeared to steer directly toward them.
“The car was put into drive and was trying to hit the ICE officer,” Scott said, adding that an agent fired roughly four shots in response.
“I just heard the popping, but I did see him draw his gun,” Scott said.
Shocking Scene
Another witness said the driver managed to get out of the vehicle after the shooting but was bleeding heavily from a head wound. “He said, ‘I tried to stop,'” nearby resident Daniel Boucher recalled.
A Portland-based immigrant advocacy organization, the man had been legally authorized to work in the United States and had been issued a Social Security number, according to Presente! Maine.
In a joint statement with the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, the organization expressed condolences to the man’s family. “He was a member of our community, a neighbor, and a human being whose life was cut tragically short,” the statement read.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and everyone now grieving this unimaginable loss.”
Ring camera footage from a nearby home captured the sound of multiple gunshots echoing through the otherwise quiet residential neighborhood. Residents also said they had noticed a visible increase in ICE activity around Biddeford in recent weeks.
“They chased down a bunch of guys working on a roof down the street a week or two ago. They all ran. I saw one guy jump off the roof to get away. They left all their equipment on top of the roof,” Biddeford resident Larry Humiston told the Portland Press Herald.
The Biddeford Police Department confirmed that the shooting involved ICE personnel and said officers responded to reports of the incident. In a statement, the department said its role is now limited to securing the scene while the investigation continues.
As of now, neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security has released a public statement about the shooting.
