Jennifer Finch: Bassist and Singer of All-Girl Group L7 Dies Aged 59 Just Days After Surgery for ‘Aggressive’ form of Cancer

Jennifer Finch, the bassist and vocalist for the 1990s all-female rock band L7, has died at the age of 59 following a battle with an aggressive form of cancer. The news comes just days after she underwent brain surgery as part of her treatment. Her death was announced on Saturday evening in a post shared on Finch’s official Instagram account.

The caption read, “We are devastated to announce the death of our partner, sister, daughter, and friend Jennifer Precious Finch. Jennifer’s impact on the world of music was seismic; her impact on our lives, even moreso. We appreciate everyone’s interest and concern, thank you for all the kind messages. We appreciate some space to heal privately during this difficult time.”

Gone too Soon

Just hours before the announcement, Finch’s account reposted a message from her bandmate, Donita Sparks, 63, who shared a photo and wrote that she was “sending much love and strength to my beautiful, talented bandmate.”

Earlier this week, Finch posted a photo showing her surgery scar as her family and friends appealed for donations to support her cancer treatment. On Monday, she publicly revealed that she had been diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Finch’s bandmates announced her diagnosis in an Instagram statement, revealing that she would be unable to join the band’s upcoming farewell tour.

“Following multiple surgeries and serious complications, Jennifer now requires extensive medical care, rehabilitation and professional in-home support,” the statement said.

The post included a link to a GoFundMe campaign created by her loved ones. The fundraiser featured a photo of a smiling Finch pulling back her hair to show the healing incision from one of her surgeries.

Support quickly poured in through the crowdfunding campaign. By Saturday evening, it had raised $393,596, exceeding its original goal of $350,000.

The money would “allow Jennifer to remain safely and comfortably at home” during her treatment, according to the fundraiser.

Star in Her Own Right

The page also asked for donations to help cover the “significant out-of-pocket medical expenses and legal fees” already incurred during her care. Acknowledging “the difficult reality that Jennifer may have more good days behind her than ahead,” her loved ones also asked for donations to help preserve Finch’s legacy by creating an archive of her artistic and creative work.

Finch was one of L7’s earliest and longest-serving members, joining the band in 1986, a year after it was formed in Los Angeles.

She also appeared in Hole’s 1994 music video for Doll Parts, stepping in for bassist Kristen Pfaff, who had died from a heroin overdose at the age of 27.

Although Finch left L7 in 1996 and the band split in 2001, the group reunited in 2014.

In May, L7 announced its farewell tour, The Last Hurrah 2026, which is scheduled to begin in October.
