John Oliver Lands A Guest-Starring Role On ‘General Hospital’
Last Week Tonight host John Oliver has landed his long-sought role on daytime TV with a recurring role on General Hospital.
On his March 8 episode, Oliver admitted he was “jealous” when sports analyst Stephen A. Smith was cast in a recurring role on General Hospital. He now has gotten his wish. Oliver will appear in a three-episode arc airing on July 2, 3 and 6.
Oliver broke the news of his casting on Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight.
“To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you,” Oliver said on his March 8 show. “Write me a role, and I’ll be on your set so fast, it’ll make your head spin. I only have a few conditions: First, I don’t want to play myself, I want to be a character. And I want his name to be ridiculous. Also, I want to do something juicy — like murder or slapping or being slapped or being someone’s long-lost something — and, ideally, I’d like a dramatic closeup of my face. But in return, trust me, I will give my all to this performance.”
Details of Oliver’s role haven’t been revealed. But you can see in the photo above, he’s likely not playing himself, with his hair dyed black, in a navy suit with black shirt and tie, and a very stern look.
General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini said the show was happy to oblige.
“When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we didn’t hesitate for a second,” Valenti said. “He was everything you’d hope he’d be: prepared, professional, funny and genuinely kind to everyone on set. He plays an integral character in the story, and I can’t wait for fans to see who he crosses paths with in Port Charles.”
Oliver said in a statement: “General Hospital was everything I hoped it would be. It’s a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show.”
