Kody Brown Leaves Sister Wives: Why Did He Quit and What Happens to the Show Now?
TV show Sister Wives is set to air a new season without one of its main characters. Kody Brown and his wife Robyn Brown are leaving the reality TV show, making Season 21 all about Kody’s ex-wives Christine Brown Woolley, Janelle Brown, and Meri Brown.
The cast changes were previewed in the Season 21 trailer, first published Sept. 14, which highlighted the shock of Kody’s long-term wives after he left the reality show following 16 years of being on it.
Why Did Kody Brown Leave Sister Wives?
The fact is, he has not publicly revealed the reason for his departure. TLC Network, which owns the show, has also been quiet on the issue.
The lack of an official statement has led to rampant speculation about what might have happened. Some reports even claimed that the reason was related to the renegotiation of the contract between Kody and TLC. However, these theories have not been confirmed by Kody, Robyn, or the network.
An online petition calling for Kody’s return and a circulating statement supposedly given by him before leaving have fueled the rumors, but reports have called them unsubstantiated.
It is also possible the couple simply wants to enjoy their lives without having to constantly interact with cameras and producers.
Regardless, Kody’s exit is likely related to the dissolution of the polygamous marriage, which initially prompted the creation of the series.
What Happened to Kody’s Marriages?
When Sister Wives first started in 2010, Kody had three wives: Meri, Janelle, and Christine. Robyn was also a part of the Brown family, as she had married Kody in 2008, but she gave birth to his children and moved in with him later in the first season. All of Kody’s marriages except the one with Robyn eventually ended.
Christine filed for divorce in 2021 and married David Woolley, also becoming his stepmother later that year. Janelle and Kody divorced in 2022. Meri and Kody divorced last year, and now Robyn is Kody’s only remaining wife.
As a result, the focus of the series has shifted from the polygamous family to the relationships between the former sister-wives, who had to restructure their lives after losing Kody and starting to live separately.
While Kody was still married to Robyn, she remained the focal point of the family, often interacting with Kody’s children.
However, as Robyn became pregnant again, Christine and Janelle started to gain more attention as they prepared to move out from under Kody’s roof.
Kody and Robyn’s separation appears to have given the network an excuse to move on from him and focus more on the interactions between the former sister-wives without the constant presence of Kody.
What Happens to Sister Wives Now?
Even though Kody and Robyn have left the show, the series is expected to continue.
The first episode of Season 21 was released Oct. 4 and is dedicated to Christine, Janelle, and Meri Brown, who continue to navigate their complex relationships with each other, as well as the legacy of Kody and Robyn’s polygamy.
According to the TLC website, Season 21 captures “a new chapter for these sister-wives, focusing on their journey navigating life after Kody.
Janelle is venturing out on her own in North Carolina, Meri is still hoping to find someone to share her life with, and Christine continues to revel in her life with David.
Additionally, the women have to confront the challenges of the Coyote Pass land and the messy inheritance that comes with it.
It remains unclear if or when Kody Brown will return to the TV show Sister Wives.
Although his and Robyn’s separation has become the new status quo, the network has yet to comment on the possibility of further development of the polygamous family or Kody’s potential return to the show.
Nevertheless, Season 21 appears to mark the end of the road for Kody Brown on Sister Wives, as the women who used to live under his roof now have to restructure their lives without him.
