Kyle Shanahan Injury Update: 49ers Coach Opens Training Camp After Serious Car Accident

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has returned to the team as training camp gets underway, just weeks after a serious car accident left him with multiple injuries, including broken ribs, a broken hand and a severe concussion.

While the crash initially raised questions about whether Shanahan would be able to oversee the team’s preparations for the 2026 NFL season, the 49ers have confirmed he will participate in training camp on a limited basis as he continues his recovery. Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will take on many of the day-to-day on-field responsibilities until Shanahan is medically cleared.

What Happened to Kyle Shanahan?

According to ESPN, the accident occurred on July 14 near Shanahan’s home in northern California when his vehicle collided with an SUV. Emergency responders took the 49ers coach to a local hospital, where he was treated before being released later that day. Authorities said the other driver was not injured.

Police also confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash, both drivers cooperated with investigators and no citations were issued. Officials have not identified which driver may have been at fault.

What Injuries Did Kyle Shanahan Suffer?

Sources familiar with the situation told ESPN that Shanahan sustained several significant injuries, including a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, more than 40 stitches to his face and a severe concussion.

Although doctors are reportedly pleased with his overall physical recovery, concussion symptoms remain the primary reason he has not yet resumed full coaching duties.

What Have the 49ers Said?

The organisation confirmed Shanahan’s condition in an official statement. “San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries.”

The team also thanked the first responders and medical personnel who assisted Shanahan following the accident.

Will Kyle Shanahan Coach During Training Camp?

Training camp begins with several weeks remaining before San Francisco opens the 2026 season against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10 in Melbourne, Australia. The additional preparation time is expected to allow Shanahan to gradually return to his normal workload, provided his concussion symptoms continue to improve.

Shanahan has been one of the NFL’s most influential coaches since taking over the 49ers in 2017.

Under his leadership, San Francisco has become a perennial Super Bowl contender thanks to its innovative offence and consistent playoff success.

The 2026 campaign marks Shanahan’s 10th season with the franchise, tying Bill Walsh for the longest coaching tenure in 49ers history. He also enters the season with 82 regular-season victories, the third-most by any head coach in franchise history.
