LA riots: Looting breaks out as Newsom challenges Homan—live updates

Scenes of violence and looting have rocked Los Angeles, California, as rioting broke out amid protests against immigration enforcement in the city.

Rioters burned cars and threw heavy objects at police vehicles, and President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops to quell the unrest, despite opposition from state and local leaders, who accused him of fanning the flames.

Protesters have attempted to deter immigration raids and detentions by federal officials seeking to deport those in the U.S. illegally.

Tom Homan, White House border czar, said California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass were both risking arrest.

“I’ll say this about anybody—if you cross that line, it’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal illegal aliens, it’s a felony to impede law enforcement from doing their job,” Homan told NBC News.

Newsom replied to Homan in a post on X: “Come and get me, tough guy. I don’t give a damn. It won’t stop me from standing up for California.”
