I had to laugh at the poll taken in Sunday’s Sun. The question was: ‘Do you wear a poppy every November,’ and to my amazement 96% said yes. I was wondering if this poll was taken in a diverse area of population in the city of Calgary, because the math doesn’t add up to me and look around on your daily stroll and do the math. Thanks to all the brave men and women who fought and served and gave their lives for our freedoms and celebrate their brave acts.

Cheney and the truth…

The greatest falsehood encouraged by Dick Cheney was to allow the invasion of Iraq to be seen as part of the War on Terror. Cheney knew there was no connection between 9/11 and Iraq and that Iraq had never sponsored terrorism on American soil. As to the other major falsehood in his career, that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, he probably believed that to be true. Cheney and other American officials, including Colin Powell, weren’t skeptical enough of the faulty intelligence they were receiving. His assessment of Donald Trump in his later years shows a much more acute sense of the truth.

BRUCE COUCHMAN, Toronto

(He was certainly a polarizing figure)

Get off your phones

Just reading Ricky Leong’s column Nov 4th (‘Time to smarten up,’ Calgary Sun, Nov. 4). Some of his points are true regarding drivers needing to be more aware when pedestrians are around. But the pedestrians out there today have got ear buds on walking like zombies right out into traffic, and you cannot say that a day goes by that you don’t see this. Not much different at all from drivers on their bloody phones, at the traffic light or not. Get these phones out of sight and enforce that law. Fine pedestrians, they are a danger too.

Katy & Justin

So another unfortunate woman has fallen for Mr. Trudeau, and I can only see one ending. Soon, Miss Perry will be writing a song using a line from Jody Raybould-Wilson. ‘I wish I had never met you.’

STUART WEEKS

(If those two crazy kids can’t make it work, what chance is there for the rest of us?)

Diane Ladd will be missed

RIP Diane Ladd. The no-nonsense Southern Belle and three-time Oscar nominee brought a lot of herself to the table with ‘scene-stealing zest’ in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Wild at Heart, and Rambling Rose. Condolences to daughter Laura Dern.

PAUL BACON
